For Getting Your Things From Here to There by Daryln Brewer

The New York Times, August 20, 1987

When Steven Fiore was running a moving company from a brownstone on West 96th Street seven years ago he wasn't in the business of selling boxes, just packing and mov-ing them. But he said, "People came in looking for moving materials - I was doing business selling boxes without advertising and without look-ing for the business."

In 1981 he opened the Moving Store, West Side Movers, at 644 Amsterdam Avenue (91st Street; 212-874-3800) The amateur mover no longer needs to canvass the local grocery and liquor stores for boxes. Mr. Fiore's store sells the same boxes used by professional movers: lampshade boxes, boxes for legal-size folders, mattress boxes, wardrobe boxes and more.

The Moving Store, West Side Movers, carries other moving supplies: twine, tape, wrapping paper, bubble wrap, foam "popcorn," corrugated wrap and inserts for packing crystal. Hand trucks, dollies and movers' pads are for sale or rent.

The Moving Store's, West Side Movers, three most popular boxes are the book and record box ($1.50, still the same price); the linen box ($2.50, now $3.00) and, for breakables, the "Dishpack" ($4.50, now $5.50). *

The chief considerations in packing, Mr. Fiore said, are a box of the correct size, which helps prevent damage, and common sense ("Don't pack books on top of dishes," he said).

Delivery is free in Manhattan for orders of $30 or more, and free to the other boroughs with a $100 purchase. A brochure and a manual, "How to Pack for Moving," are free.
