SINCE 1972

Steve Fiore founded West Side Movers in 1972 on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He started the company in the apartment he shared with his wife, Joanne, at 46 West 96th Street. Having recently completed his service in the US Army, Steve opened West Side Movers to be a reputable, local moving company in the neighborhood. Joanne lent Steve two thousand dollars to start the company, which was her entire life savings at the time.

Eight years later, in 1980, Steve opened a storefront called The Moving Store, at 644 Amsterdam Avenue, right off of West 92nd street. The store served as the company’s headquarters, and they also sold professional moving and packaging supplies out of the storefront. It was the first retailer to sell professional moving supplies in New York City. The storefront also served as a meeting place for the local community.

In 2003, Steve passed away from cancer, and Joanne, his wife, became the second president of West Side Movers. A trained psychotherapist in private practice on the Upper West Side, with 25 years of experience, Joanne used that skillset to reduce the stress often associated with moving. During her time as president, Joanne became known as ‘the moving therapist’ – she placed a strong value on empathy, which has made a lasting impact on our company culture.

In 2011, Matt Fiore, Steve and Joanne’s son, became the third president of West Side Movers. Matt grew up working for the company and uses that experience and his fresh perspective to bring West Side Movers into the modern era, while maintaining all of the tried-and-true business practices upon which the company was founded.
